Aviation Academy

How do I get started to become a pilot?

Flight Training in Canada is regulated by Transport Canada, which sets the requirements for pilot licencing. At Zulu Aviation we will make sure that you meet all those requirements to get your pilot licence. These requirements include ground school (theory classes) and flight training (practical classes). Flight training is an one on one session with a flight instructor in one of our flight school aircraft. A typical lesson includes 30 minutes on the ground for briefing going over the flight lesson (preparatory ground), 15 minutes for a preflight/walk around and 60 minutes for the flight itself, then 15 minutes to debrief. Debriefing includes a discussion about the flight and how to prepare for the next lesson. Flight training can start any time. You are in a class of one. When you and the instructor show up, the lesson starts. The pacing and schedule are up to you. You can schedule 4-5 times a week or once a month, however, the more often you fly the sooner the course will be done and the less money it will cost you to learn to fly. Ground school are the theory classes and cover all the knowledge required for the written exam. Ground school are done in a group setting, and starting dates are usually every 2 months. You do not need to complete ground school before you start flight training.

How long does it take to learn to fly and complete the courses?

It is up to you since you decide your own pace and schedule. Students may complete any of the courses part time or full time. The part time route might take 6 months to complete the Private Pilot Licence and 24-36 months to complete the Commercial Pilot Licence. Training can be arranged during weekends, weekdays and evenings. You may train in stages. For example, you may get your Private Pilot Licence (PPL) today and complete your Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) in a couple of years from now. If you wish, you can complete your training full time. Fly every day and go from zero to hero (CPL/ME-IR) in 18 months!

I'm XZ years old? It is that too old to fly?

No, there is no maximum age to learn to fly. The only requirement is to pass and hold the medical.

I'm XZ years old? Am I old enough?

You can start your flight training at any age, as long as you are able reach the flight controls! To go solo you need to be at least 14 years old, to hold a Recreational Pilot Permit you need to be 16, for Private Pilot Licence 17 years old and for a Commercial Pilot Licence 18 years old.

Is it hard to learn to fly?

Anything in life that is valuable takes some work. Actually flying the airplane is similar to driving a standard shift car in terms of hand/eye coordination. The ground school material is written at a grade 9 level. There is nothing in the ground school that is rocket science, what surprises people is how much has to be learned and then brought together.

Do I need a medical to start flying?

No, you need a medical to fly solo. To find a Civil Aviation Medical Examiner in you area click here

What type of medical do I need?

For the Recreational Pilot Permit, you need a Category IV (4) medical, which can be obtained at our Family doctor and is valid for 5 years. For the Private Pilot Licence, you need a Category III (3) medical, which can only be obtained at a Civil Aviation Medical Examiner and is valid for 5 years. For the Commercial Pilot Licence, you need a Category I (1) medical, which can only be obtained at a Civil Aviation Medical Examiner and is valid for 1 year.

Do I need perfect vision to fly?

No, it's just a myth. However, vision must be corrected to 20/20

What is VFR? IFR?

VFR - Visual Flight Reference Flying by looking out the window and following geographical references. IFR - Instrument Flight Reference Flying by reference to the instruments on-board the aircraft.

When is a good time to start my flight training?

You can being flying at any time during the year, however, it is usually best to begin during the months of March to June. This way, you can do all of the single engine training in good weather, so not may flights will be cancelled due to bad weather.

Do you accept International students?

Unfortunately we do not for the time being. However, we are working hard to start hosting students from all around the world.

Flight Club

What is block time? Is it legal?

The simple definition of block time is a private aircraft owner renting their aircraft for recreational use to other individuals. Is it legal? The short answer is YES. We have been selling block time since 2015 and maintained all our operations within the CARs. As the owner of our fleet, we provide an aircraft compliant with the Canadian Aviation Regulations and a valid insurance policy that covers the aircraft, the pilot and the passenger. What makes it legal is that we do not provide any other services such as a pilot for hire, fuel or anything else other than the aircraft. The renter is responsible to provide their fuel and comply with our Aircraft Rental Agreement. It is important to note that the Canadian Aviation Regulations do not restrict the rental of an aircraft, as long as is not involved in an activity that constitutes a commercial air service. Transport Canada does not regulate the sale of block time, however, they do regulate the overall airworthiness of the aircraft.

I'm thinking of doing my time building with you guys. Can the hours be certified in my logbook?

Yes. All the hours flown at our Flight Club can be certified by us and will count for the licence or rating you are trying to achieve. You don't need certification from your Flight Training Unit.

Is your fleet properly maintained?

We are a pilot-owned business and fly the Flight Club fleet regularly. We know our airplanes and take care of them. All our maintenance is done by a commercial Approved Maintenance Organization. We have a computer system that tracks all maintenance-related items, as well as an online snag reporting system accessible to all our members. As a member, you will have a transparent picture of the aircraft state, the maintenance schedule and snags reported by other members.

What do I need to provide to become a Flight Club member?

You need to provide a valid Pilot Licence, a valid medical and the last page of your logbook.

Is there a minimum of hours that I'm required to purchase?

Yes. We require members to purchase a minimum of 10 hours on a type.

Is there a membership fee? Does my membership expire?

There's a monthly membership fee of $40 that covers insurance. The membership does not expire.

How do I get checked out?

We have a streamlined checkout process that includes a pre-briefing session where you will be completing an open-book quiz on general flight operations and the aircraft's systems, and where your Designated Check Pilot will brief you and answer any questions you may have. Next, the Designated Check Pilot will hop with you on the aircraft for a 30 minutes flight where they will note your flying abilities and knowledge of the area. After a satisfactory checkout, you will have access to our online booking system and you will be cleared to go!

I have thousands of hours on XZ aircraft. What do I need to get checked out?

Regardeless of your experience, our insurance policy requires that all renters complete our checkout process.

How many hours do I need to rent your Piper Seneca?

You are required to have a minimum of 10 hours on a multi-engine aircraft.

Can I go for overnight trips?

Yes! We encourage pilots to grab the keys and go explore, however, members must send an "Overnight Form" that provides us information about your trip plans and how you will be securing the aircraft when out of base.

How long can I have the aircraft for?

We do not have a limit on how long the aircraft can be rented for, however, we ask our members to be mindful and courtegous and rent (and fly) the aircraft for a reasonable amount of time. For example, we don't allow taking the aircraft to a short hop to Victoria and stay there for a week.

Can I go to unprepared fields?

Members are allowed to land at any registred aerodrome with a hard surface of at least 2100 feet, unless checked out and authorized by us

Flying is our business, so the decision to cancel or postpone a flight doesn’t come easy. The Flight Instructor will make the final call as to whether or not the Pilot of the Day flight will happen and will be the best judge of conditions. The Flight Instructor will only cancel the flight if the weather is deemed to jeopardize the safety of the flight. If your flight is cancelled due to weather, we will reschedule you for a time of your choosing.

We will sometimes request your body weight to most accurately fulfill Transport Canada Safety Regulations and to reduce the chance that a flight is overbooked due to the aircraft being loaded above safe parameters.

What happens during the Pilot of the Day flight?

The Flight Instructor will guide you through the operations of the aircraft, including the taxi and take-off. You can choose different destinations to fly to before hand, such us the Sumas Valley or the Vancouver Area.
